I’m in Pittsburgh, don’t know why. I’m tired, and I can’t get him off my mind.
Every major sport has its own hall of fame, but now there’s a way to honor LGBT athletes and sporting superstars too.
The National Gay & Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame, based at Chicago’s Center on Halsted, certainly couldn’t have existed ten or even five years ago. But the Hall of Fame has just announced its inaugural class, to be honored at the Center on August 2.
The current list of inductees includes tennis legends Billie Jean King, Renee Richards, and Martina Navratilova; Olympic gold medalist diver Greg Louganis; former baseball player Glenn Burke; NBA player Jason Collins; pro boxer Orlando Cruz; former Major League Lacrosse goalie Andrew Goldstein; the Chicago Cubs; Standup Foundation founder Ben Cohen; ESPN contributors LZ Granderson and Christina Kahrl; Gay Games founder Dr. Tom Waddell; Outsports.com; “Bleacher Preacher” Jerry Pritikin; International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA); and Anheuser-Busch.
“We’re not just going to honor gay athletes, but other athletes who helped those gay athletes along and provided a safe haven,” said Bill Gubrud, executive director and board chairman of the nonprofit, in the Chicago Tribune.
This is incredible. Congrats to all involved! And if you’re based in Chicago, consider getting a ticket to the induction ceremony!

LGBT activists in Arizona have launched a campaign to repeal the state’s ban on marriage equality through a ballot initiative.
Arizona voters banned marriage equality in 2008 with 56% of the vote. But Equal Marriage Arizona is determined to change that, circulating a petition for a question on the 2014 ballot that would define marriage as a union between two adults, rather than between a man and a woman.
“The attitudes of this state, of the people of this state, have changed a lot,” marriage advocate and business owner Warren Meyer told the Associated Press.“We believe that Arizonans are ready for equal marriage.”
Meyer and Log Cabin Republican chairwoman Erin Ogletree Simpson officially filed papers to launch the campaign on Monday with the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. They plan to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on its two marriage equality cases, concerning the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, before launching their signature campaign.
